Arthur Worthington, who formorly 6gurod as a religious leader in .New Zealand, and in forgery cases in Mclborne, died suddenly in gaol. Samuel Oakley Crawford, better known in New Zoaland under the abas of tho Rev. A. B. Worthington, was born in New York TO years ago, and at the time of his death was serving a. term of imprisonment on a charge ot falso pretences concerning the Presbyterian Church at Toughkeepsie, -New York He fought in the American Civil' War, and after peace he studied law and was admitted to the Bar _in New York.' He practised his profession for onlv a brief period, and then ombarked'on a career of crime swindling and bigamy being his chief exploits, and he had served several terms of imprisonment. He reached Chnstchurch in 1890, where he established an organisation as the Students of Truth. He induced his followers to provide the money to build a temple, which is now the Choral Hall. From Chnstchurch ho went to Melbourne, and again embarked on a career of fraud, but was arrested, and on his release from gaol in 1907 he went to America.
