PENALTIES FOR "SHOUTING."
A GISBORNE PROTEST, (PBESS ASSOCIATION' TELEGRAM.) j GISBORNE, December 6. As a sequel to the imposition of the £50 -fines on two barmen convicted by the Magistrate (Mr W. A. Barton), of breaches of the anti-shouting regulations, the Hotel Employees' Union tonight Btrongly criticised the Magistrate's. action in imposing such heavy penalties, particularly . me of the defendants is a marriec. L an with six children. Resolutions were pa6sod protesting against the regulation itself, againßt the provision debarring a convicted barman from employment in hotels for six months, and against the heavy iines in question. It wae also decided to ask other labour organisations to make representations for the repeal or modification of tho regulations. and to forward copies of the resolutions to tho Minister of Justice, Attorney-General, and all Labour members of Parliament. A subscription list is being circulated among the public to raise the money to pay the men's fines. A representative of the Auckland Hotel Employees' TJnion. at present in Gisborne, pledged his unions in support of the protest.
