■ - iThe Hon. J. T. Paul, M.L.C., passed through Christchurch yesterday on his way from Dunedin to Wellington. Mr It. R. Walter, who has been landing waiter for the Customs Department at Nelson for some time, has been promoted to Wellington. ' Police-Sergeant C. J. King has arrived in Christchurch, on transfer from Wellington. He Will take up his duties at the Central Police Station on Saturday. | Mr J. Sturrock, civil engineer, has been specially engaged by the Heathcote Countv Council to compile a report on the drainage system in the Cashmere Riding. The Hon. J. A. Hanatt, Minister of Education, arrived from the North yesterday morning, and went on to Dunedin, en route for Invercargill, by the express. Lieutenant L. de B. Brandon, M.C., D.S.O. (son of Lieutenant-Colonel A., de B. Brandon, of Wellington), who sustained a serious fracture of one of his legs while flying in Sussex, England, haß recovered from his injury, and returned to his squadron. Mr E. P. Day, assistant solicitor to the Public Trust Office for eight years, has been appointed to succeed Mr J. W. Macdonald as solicitor to the ojjice, Mr Macdonald having been promoted to a seat on the recently constituted board to control the office. Mr R. A. Ridley, who was a member of the staff of Dalgfity and Co., Christchurch, and went away with the Bth Reinforcements, has received his commission, and when the last mail left was undergoing a four months' course of training at Oxford, England. Mr Ridley, who was a prominent cricketer, lias occupied every post up to that of regi-mental-sergeant-major since leaving with the Bths. Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, arrived in Christchurch yesterday afternoon from Dunedin. Last evening lie attended the p*'ze-givihg ceremony in connexion with -he Boys' High School. This morning at 9.15 he will inspect the Christ's College Cadets, and he will then motor out to Hanmcr Springs and inspect the Queen Mary Hospital and attend to other matters. He will stay there tho evening and return to Christchurch to-morrow, leaving for Wellington in the evening. Mrs L. B. Tullock, of Mangatu, Poverty Bay, has received advice that her brother, Lieutenant Oscar E. Gallie, who was recently awarded the M.C., has now been decorated by King George with the D.S.O. and promoted to the ; rank of captain. His younger brother, Second-Lieutenant Victor James Gallie, also received the M.C. and a second star several months ago. Both these young officers were among the first to enlist when war broke out. ; going first to Samoa with D Battery (Wellington), one as a sergeant, the other as a gunner. They. yien proceeded to England, and obtained their commission in the R.F.A., and nave been in tho firing-line for over two years. An elder brother left with the 25th Reinforcements and is now in France.
