THE RAIDERS IN FIJI.

ANOTHER LITTLE STORY.

SUVA (FIJI), October 31. There comes to hand another little Btory concerning the capture of the Germans, headed by Count von Lucknor, in Fiji. He was a Rotu man, was Piufou, and a member of the British Empire, when the raiders landed at Waikaya Island, jriurou is suupie-iooiiLug, guuuicss native, and aDont tne last in the world to have a second uiougnt about anything, so oeo would tuuiK j but J/iuiou Mas uot quite so simple as he looked. When tne Germans came ttiey told him, in English, tiiat they wero castaway liinglisn sailors, wiiose vessel had been wrecked. The Germans wero careful ouough to realise that oven away out here in the niid-Paciiic the native might know there was a war on and the Germans were his enemies. Piufou spoke excellent English, although the Germans did not know this, for he answered in broken English, and agreed to all they tsaid, and listened—very carefully, for Piufou also spoke Ger. man, or, at loast ho had a good knowledge of it. There used to be many German traders in the Islands once. Now, although Piufou, the Rotu man, spoke escellont English and middling German, he only spoke to the Germans in broken English. Ho entertained the Germans, and made their 6tay a happy one for the few days they were there. He helped, too, to quieten their fears, in broken English, when they saw a cutter beating out to windward. This was the cutter, with Macpherson. the half-caste, in it, Tvhich brought the news to Levuka, resulting eventually in tho capture of the Huns. Tt was Piufou who told Huns it was the usual cutter which went to Mokogai, the leper station about there. It is to be hoped that some day von Lucknor will read this, ailtt learn how Piufou, the Rotu mas, with the guileless face, was instrumental in sending them to a place where they can cool their heels.—Auckland "Star's'' correspondent.
