FIRES
A shop and dwelling, situate at the corner of Hoon Hay and Lincoln roads, was burned to tho ground last evening. Tho placo was occupied by Mr A. Jowett, but was not owned by him. Mrs Jowctt, -who was melting beeswax and turpentine in a utensil on a gas ring W the kitchen, was called into tho sitting-room by her husband. She remained there about tn'o minutes, and o;i returning to the kitchen found tho in flames. Mr Jowctt had £000 ;»r £700 worth of stock in the shop, and it was.insured for but £250 in the Stato office. The furniture, including piano, Rallied at £250, was insured tor £100 the same office. The insurance on the building is £350 in the Allianco office. The only stock saved was three or four bags of sugar. Mr Jowctt, who was just recovering from a two years' illness, had only recently recommenced work at his business, \hich sympathy is felt for him and his wife, who escaped with what clothes they stood up in. A '"go telegraph pole just outside tho shop door, and on which were somo electric wires, was only saved by the strenuous efforts of a few tramwaymen who had been sent for by telephone.
