RACING AND TROTTING NOTES.

(BY "LOOKER-ON.")

Subterfuge was fairly beaten by Winter Cherry in the Ashley Handicap yesterday, but she was unlucky to just get touched off for the second time. Winter Cherry has promised .to do something good for a long tune, but prior to yesterday lias always failed. She iy an imported filly by Minora from Florette,- and on her running yesterday she looks likely to win in much better company before long. Borodino was well supported, but failed to run into a forward position, and may not bo as good as he is creditod with being. Impediment was ridden a different race in the Oaks from that of the Derby. Going to the front at the rise of the barrier, she sailed along on the bit and won in very hollow fashion. Nanna w-as not seasoned enough to see the twelve furlongs out. Her strong point is evidently speed. Lingerie carricd G-Jlb overweight when she won the Criterion Handicap yesterday, and ran tho six furlongs out much better than was expected of her. Daytime began well from No. 1 berth, and ran a great race. ■ He and Lingerie were never parted all the way, and tho little horse only snccumbed by inches. Wrestler drew the extreme outside position at tho barrier. He began well, and was always with tho leading division, but he stopped at the distance, and finished a poor third. Form Up, who was favourite, began badly, but finished close np. Fiery Cross won the Jockey Club Handicap in very hollow fashion. Ho had his field well beaten two furlongs from home, and won on the bit. Adjutant ran very badly, and was one of the last to finish. Margerine got a bad bump after going two furlongs, and it was a wonder she managed to stand on her feet. Sen.down did not get a very <;ood run over the early stages of the '■'•Co, but he finished well in third 'ip.ee. Rorke's Drift was another that .•,ot a bad time. Ho finished very fast.

The three horses in the Canterbury Cup only crawled for twelve furlongs, then the pace was put on, and Estland ran the last six furlongs in Imin 15sec.

Desert Gold did not begin as well as ' usual in the Eiecrtnc Plate, and at thft end of a furlong, Birkenvale, Croesus, and Trentham Rose ivere all in front of her. Ridden right out, she just got; up to win by a neck from Crcesus. Bopeep got away very bad v. and . was not to hu seen until the last fur- | lor. 1; was entered on. Then she catno ■ with a great run, and was going faster ; than anything at the finisn. the J running, it looked as if she would have I won if she had got out on terms with j her opponents.

Messrs Pyne and Co. will hold their | annual sale of yearlings at the Chester street stables at 9.30 a.m. to-day. Tit<2

catalogue of over fifty yearlings comprises drafts from tho leading studs of tho Dominion, and as they are a fine looking and well-bred lot of youngsters, they should arouso keen coraPe tit ion. The draft from Mr J. 15. lleid s Eldcrslie stud includes four fillies by Kilbronoy, a filly by Solforino, and a filly h v San Francisco. Mr J. F. Eeid is sending forward from the Bumside Stud five fillies, threo geldings, and two colts by Solferino. colt by The Welkin, and a filly liv Nassau. Mr J. F. Buchanan's druit from tho Rinloch Stud consists of a fillv by Solferino, a filly by Martian, and two colts by the same sire. Mr I. 0. Duncan has entered from the AVaikanao Stud two fillies by Martian, one colt and two fillies by Bezonian, one colt and two fillies by Birkonliond i and a colt and a filly by Winkie, and in addition ho is offering six imported English yearlings. On account of Mrs M. A. Perry, there will bo offered seven colts and two fillies by Demosthenes, and a colt by Formative. Mr Bruce Christie will submit for sale two yearlings by Markhopo, and Mr J. C. N. Grigg has entered a colt by Demosthenes, and Mr R. Fleming a filly by Martian.

_ Handicaps for the third day 'of tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting will be posted at the club's rooms at 7.15 this evening, and acceptances are due at D p.m. Mr W. J. Morland's champion pacing mare Country Belle has foaled a colt to Mr F. Holmes's imported American stallion Logan Pointer, md the same owner's Queen H. a filly to the same sire. A correspondent writes to a Mel bourne paper: There is nothing like going big licks. Messrs Clarke and Robinson, who own the Melbourne Cup favourite Lanius, booked the whole of the thousand tickets in Tattersall's Caulfield Cup sweep commencing from seven thousand. They drew first and second horses and some 15 "fivers. ' Next time I suppose they will draw tho three placed horses. On the other hand, they may not. I know of a syndicate which has taken lO tickets since tho first sweep was drawn, and they have never even collected a consolation prize.
