EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Cantor bury Education Board mot yesterday. Present-.—Messrs C. H. Opio (chairman), T. AV. Adams, G. "\V. Armitage. \V. A. Banks, W. M. Hamilton. C'. S. Hoivard, J. Jnniieson, J. Maze, F.. H. Andrews., A. Pcrcrill, and J. Grimmond. The Board resolved to renew its application for tho establishment of a main school at A 1 lent on. The chairman of tho Board, tho chairman of the Buildings Committee, and Mr Pcveril! were appointed to meet re?->reso3r;itivc3 of tho Addington, Somerfield, and Hprcydon School Committee?. to discuss educational matter;; and ycliooi accommodation. The Lin wood School Cominitoc renewed its application for increased accommodation at the school. Tho Hoard divided to ask its senior inspector to report, and if his report wore favourable to make application to the Department for a grant- for tho additional accommodation recommended by him. The offers of iaud for a school site at South N>?w Brighton submitted to the Board wore declined, and it was resolved to make application to tho New Brighton Domain Board for a sito of lour acres for a school at South Now Brighton. lii regard to an application for increased accommodation at the North New Brighton School, it was resolved that, as the accommodation was .sufficient to meet present requirements, tho question of the erection of a new building bo held over in tho meantime. Tho tender of F. "Woodcock, at £872, ' was accepted lor tho eroction of an addition of two rooms at the Beckenham school. There wore five tenders. A letter was received from tho North Canterbury Hospital Board, forwarding a communication from Dr. Fox, expressing the opinion that children do not remain in hospital sufficiently long to warrant tho appointment of a teacher, and, further, that most children under such circumstances are not in tho mental health and rigour to be able to sustain lessons. Tho Hospital Board was thanked for the information. Mr Howard was requested to visit Timaru Hospital with Mr Cow, and, after making enquiry, to report as to the children there who might need instruction. Threo deputations waited upon the Board. One from the Mackenzie (Cheviot) School Commit-too presented a long petition, and pointed out that their school ground was low-lying, and a bad drain ran along two .sides of it. They asked for a change of site. It was decided to defer consideration of the request until some members of tho Board, who aro shortly visiting North Canterbury, liad inspected the site. A deputation from tho Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, the Canterbury Carpenters and Joiners' Union, and the Canterbury Builders and Contractors' Association urged tho Board to pay the same wage? to its carpenters as were stipulated by tho award. Tbo members of tho Board wero sympathetic to tho request-, and promised favourable consideration. The third deputation was from the Sydenham School Committee, and urged the erection of a now school at Sydenham, in place of the present one which they stated was very old and out of date. The chairman said tho Board was doing everything possible to get a new school, and application had been made to the Department for a contribution towards four ftew rooms.
