Mr F. Thompson, manager of the Tramways, speaks strongly regarding tho risks taken by people who board the cars while in motion. He said that this dangerous practice had been particularly evident on Monday. There were more than sufficient cars to tako the crowds out to the races and return them, but racegoers all seemed possessed of the idea that if they did not catch the car immediately in front of them they would bo left behind, and they therefore rushed it, often while it was in motion. "We have got through so far without accidents," added Mr Thompson, "but if people persist in taking such great risks we shall be exceedingly fortunate if we continue to do so."

On account of the scarcity of tonnage for deep-sea carrying trade, a shipping firm lias bought her, and plans to turn hor into a cargo vessel. The old craft, which was on exhibition in Sydney Harbour somo years ago, was built moro than 80 years ago. There was a iargo attendance at the Opera House last night, when Mr T. -VI. Wilford, M.P. for Hutt, who lias proved a popular lecturer on war matters in Wellington, delivered a lecturo on "The Coming Gorman Collapse." The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) presido:l. Mr Wilford warned his hearers against an early inconclusive peace, which would lead to the adoption of the Mittel Europa scheme, whereby Germany would control the whole of Middle Europe and Asia Minor, and menace directly the British in India and Egypt. Germany for this would gladly abandon Belgium and Alsace-Lorraine, securing thoso territories when she was prepared for a further war with twenty million soldiers ton years hence. The present Teutonic offensive was merely a psychological attempt to depress the Aliies, for without a doubt the decisive theatre of the war was tho Western front, where, slowly but surely, the flanks of the Hindenburg lino wore being turned, and once that was effected, the end of the war would be in sight.
