AMERICA IN EARNEST.
DR. J. C. PALMER'S VIEWS. Dr. J. C. Palmer, who has returnod from America, in conversation with a "Press" representative, said that though he had not been able to travel about tlio States to any extent, he had been able to form a fairly good idea of the American attitude towards | the war. He was satisfied that the States realised to the full the seriousness of tho present position, and that the people wero going to carry on their share of tho Allies' burden with earnestness and perseverance. . Up to within the past few months the American people were so busily engaged in the trado induced by the war that any thought of their nation actually participating as combatants Was practically non-existent, but now they had taken the plunge, and, ho felt sure, would carry out their part of the work adequately. Dr. Palmer was in Rochester (Minnesota) when the first draft was called up, and tho people all seemed to take it as a matter of course, and, in fact, seemed glad that such a svstem was established, as they realised the fairness of it. There wore no disturbances on accoilnt of the draft so far as he was aware, though ho knew a smnjl section of the people were against it, just as we had a section of peoole with similar opinions in New " Zealand. In .iourrevin* to Vancouver over tho Omod'an-Pncific lin<>. Dr Palmer noticed that two mentless dflvs per week bee n inaugurated, and on those days passengers had to content themselves with a more or less vegetarian rerast. No one grumbled, and ho thonqrht the Stntes "and Canada were going to do cood work with regard to food mnsnrx'ation in treneral. It was row forbidden to slaughter calves, and one could not order snuab chickens for dinner, a s it was that it wos trore economical to nllow calvps to crrnw ?nto beef and to allow chickens and all voun? arimaN to mature than to kill tliem when halfgrown.
