His Lordship Bishop Julius left for the north last night. The Rev. Nicholas Turner left last night to take charge of tho Dannovirko Mothodist Church. Major Fleming, Mr R. T. Sadd, Dr. D. Cordon, Captain McDonald, and Dr. Pattie, were passengers from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. The many friends of Mr Samuel Manning, a very old and much respected re--1 sident of Christchurchj who has been seriously ill for the past three months, will bo glad to learn that ho is now making good progress towards complete recovery. The North Canterbury branch of tho Educational Institute will be represented at the annual meeting of tno New Zealand Educational Institute by Misses Chaplin and Smith, and Messrs F. T. Evans, J. E. Purchase, and H. F. Penlington. Among tho returned soldiers who reached Christchurch yesterday was Corporal R. B. Bell, who was manager of tho "Ashburton Guardian" when ho enlisted in the 17th Reinforcements. Ho was eeverely wounded in the neck on tho Western Front several months ago. Advice has been received that Lieut. J R. W. Hannah, second 6on of Mr Robert Hannah, of Wellington, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Captain Hannah left with the main New Zealand body for Samoa, and on his return wont to England, where he obtained a commission as secondlieutenant in tho Royal Field Artillery.

Tho New Zealand University Senate Jias conferred the degreo of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery on tho following graduates of the Otago University:— Jveonard H. Booth, Robert L. Christie, Donald E. Currie, Gerald 1?. Fitzgerald, Mabel A. Hanron, Archibald Joseph, lan C. Macintvre, Frederick J. Mulholland, JSneas W. T. O'Sullivan, Everard O. Rowley, Frederick M. Spencer, James L. Will, Robert M. Wishart.

Tho councillors, ex-councillors, and employees of tho Hangiora Borough Council assembled at tho Council Chambers last evening to bid farewell to Mr J. A. Angus, late manager of the gasworks, who is leaving for Ashburton to lake charge of the gasworks there. Tho Mayor (Mr C. I. Jennings) presided and congratulated Mr Angus on his promotion, and said he hoped it would be a stepping-ston© to better things. On behalf of tlio councillors, Council employees, and ex-councillors, he presented Mr Angus with a Kaiapoi rug. All rhe councillors supported the Mayor in his remarks, Mr TV. Blackett speaking on behalf c£ the ex-councillor?. Mr Angus thanked all present for their appreciative remarks, and trusted that he aad bis family would make as many friends in Ashburton as they had in Rangiora.
