QUINNAT SALMON FISHING.

THE NEW REGULATIONS

The regulations relating to quinnat salmon fishing were gazetted on Friday last. They should bo generally aceeptablo to the acclimatisation societies interested as well as to anglers, as they aro tho result of modifications obtained by the delegates from tho Canterbury and North Otago Acclimatisation Societies at their recent conference with the Minister for Marine, by whose department the quinnat salmon fishing will be controlled. For tho present the Waitaki and Rangitata are declared salmon rivers, and the angling season for these two rivers will end on April loth, or on the Tuesday next after Easter Monday, if it tails on a date later than April 15th in any year. A salmon license shaii ouiy bo issued to tho holder of a trout license, wiiich must bo produced and endorsed. The salmon license for men will bo 10s, for women and boys os, and for non-residents ot New Zealand £1. Freo licenses for both trout and salmon may be issued to invalided convalescent soldiers on the recoin/cendation ot the District Health Officer. In tho salmon rivers the season when trout may be taken begins on tho first day of October, and the season when quinnat salmon may be taken begins on tho loth day of January (that is to say, that anyone fishing in tho Waitaki or Rangitata rivers on or after that date must hold a salmon as well as a trout license). Licenses to fish for salmon aro to bo issued by tho postmasters at Christchurch, Dunedin, Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru, Teruuka, Winchester, and Asliburton. The number of salmon an angler may take in one day is limited to six, and every licensed salmon angler shall keep, a record of the-number of salmon caught by him and furnish a monthly return during tho fishing season to tho secretary of the Marine Department. During the salmon angling season—from January 15th to April loth—salmon caught at sea by hook and lino by fishermen who are owners of a licensed fishing boat, may bo sold. During tho salmon spawning season, that is from April loth to July_3lst, no nets .of any kind shall be used at tho mouth of certain rivers or streams (specified), or inside tho mouth of any river which is being stocked with quinnat salmon bv the Marine Department. Among the rivers specified are tho Waiau (North Canterbury), Hurunui, Waimakariri, Rakaia, Rangitata, and Waitaki. The penalties for breaches of these regulations aro to bo not less than £2, or more than £50, provided that in the case of any person found guilty of taking salmon or trout illegally during their spawning season, or of any person who uses dynamite or other explosive substance for the purposo of "killing salmon or trout, tho minimum penalty shall not be less than £10.'
