ALLEGED FRAUD ON BOOKMAKERS.
I * FOUR MEN CHARGED. ! ' (press association telegram ) ! WELLINGTON, September 5. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Frederick Campbell Fraser was charged with having, on July 14th, with intent to defraud, by a false pretence, attempted to obtain from Henry Martindale and others the sum of £975. David Hodges, John Edward Fitzgerald, and John McWilliams, were similarly chargod. All four defendants were further charged with conspiring together, and with other persons unknown, by fraudulent means, to wit, by false telegrams, to defraud Henry Martindale, William Ryan, Robert Law, Arthur Law, David Ross, and William Whelan, of divers sums of money. Mr Macassey outlined the case for tho prosecution, and said he thought the facts to be brought out would establish a well-thought-out scheme to defraud bookmakers of a substantial sum. After the evidence of William Ryan, financial agent of Auckland, Arthur Theodore Markmann, Chief Clerk of the General Post Office, and R. W. McVilly, Assistant General Manager of New Zealand Railway, had been heard, the case was adjourned until Friday.
