SALT WORKS.
PROPOSED ESTABLISHMENT AT NEW BRIGHTON. An application was received at hist night's meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council from Mr Leslie A. Maenrthur, for the lease of an area comprising 400 acres within tho estuary at South New Brighton, as a site for the erection of buildings, plant, etc., for tho construction of "Marine elcctric solar salt works." Mi- Maearthur said in his letter lie had interviewed Mr Cyrus "Williams, secretary of tho Lyttelton Harbour Board, who had given him to understand that iio (Mr Williams) could not see any likelihood of objection to the proposal. Tho demand for salt far exceeded tho supply. No less than £73,500 worth of salt was annually imported into New Zealand. The proposed works would be constructed ou the sauio lines as those at Geelong, Victoria, plans of which he would be pleased to exhibit for tho Council's information. In regard to the proposed Christchurch to Sumner Canal, tho sito applied for. for the construction of the salt works, would not in any wav encroach upon the Canal line. Tho process of salt- manufacture, the writer continued, was absolutely clean and devoid of any waste nuisance. Fuither, tho "glistening salt pyramids" would add considerable attraction to Now Brighton, apart from the fact that a sum of from £10,000 to £10,000 would be expended in construction, a very large proportion of which would bo spent locally. An examination of raanv harbours had been made, and it was Yonnd that the New Brighton site, as applied for, was the best- suited for tho purpose. Tho Council decided to grant a lease of tho sito if satisfactory arrangements could be made with all concerned.
