GAMBLING CHARGES.

In the Police Court to-day Loftus Richards, Joseph Chadwiek, Gilbert Walker, and John Weston were charged with betting on licensed premises and in a- public place. The casus against. "Weston and Walker wore adjourned to Thursday. Richards and Chadwiek pleaded guilty and were fined £100 each on oue. information and £50 each, on 1 tho second. DUNEDIN, July 16. The police raided some Chinese premises iu Carroll street last night, and found illegal games in progress. They arrested everybody on tho premises, and charges were preferred in tho Police Court to-day against 19 Chinamen. Fifteen men, charged with being on the premises, were fined £1, tho occupier and his assistant in the conduct of the house.. who last Thursday became tho occupier, were fined £25, and another assistant £10.

Council for tho defendants said it had been stated that complaints had been n;ade about tho men ncglecting their work through gambling on Sundays. Well, they were nearly all mar. kf t gardeners, and if they Worked on Sundays they were fined." They all came t" town on Sundays. His Worship said no doubt there was a good deal of foroo in the argjment of counsel in the case of tho market gardeners; if tliov worked in their garden on Sunday thoy were prosecuted ; they came, to town and wore then prosecuted for gambling. It would be difficult to get the Chinese to understand law from the European standpoint. However, this was not a court of morals.
