EARTHQUAKE AND TIDAL WAVE.
DAMAGE AT SAMOA. (PttESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAIt.) AUCKLAND. July 16. Particulars that have been received of an earthquake and tidal wave at Samoa, on June 25th. show that alarming tremors, extending over a period of two minutes, were experienced. Buildings wero violently shaken, and the Customhouse, a concrete building, was considerably damaged, and residences and stores suffered, but to a Jess extent. Many subsidences occurred, one near tho principal stores being about 30ft squaro. The earthquake reached it s maximum in the mountains of the" interior, the ground being agitated like the waves of the ocean. Acres of trees were uprooted, and masses of rock hurled down the mountain sides. The earthquake was followed by a tidal wave, the full force of which was experienced on tho side opposite to Apia. It was severely felt on the coast at Lolofaga, Savaii, and Pagopago. The tide was dead low, but the sea swept over the beach into the adjacent native houses, carrying everything before it. Tho inhabitants fled N terror-stricken to the hills. -be Mormon Church at Pagopago was demolished. The wave was spent on reaching Haapai, but it caused the loss of several'cutters, and flooded the shops and dwellings?
