THE SUBMARINE MENACE. U-BOATS STILL ACTIVE.

IJathurst (lato UnderSecretary for Food Control) states that there has been no diminution of submnrine activity. The enemy is selecting vessels of heavier tonnage, a fact which official returns do not make clear to the public. The main reason that fewer vessels are being sunk is the arming of merchantmen. There is little hope of an improved sugar supply. Two months ago, in ten days, 40,000 tons of sugar were sunk. FRENCH STEAMERS ATTACKED. SUBMARINES DRIVEN OFF. (Augtralian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Router's Telegramn.j (Received Juuo 18tli, 6 p.m.) PARIS, Juno 17. An official message states:— "Two' French steamers report that they wero attacked by largo submarines near the Spanish coast, outside the declared blockade zones. "Both successfully maintained an artillery duel and obliged tho attackers to abandon the struggle."

NORWEGIAN STEAMER SUNK. CHRISTIAN!A, Juno 17. The Norwegian steamer Symra, of 3000 tons, was submarined and sunk off Hulva. Tho crew wore rescued. A Russian sailing vessel was destroyed between Arish and Cadiz. GERMAN STEAMER MINED. ' AMSTERDAM, June 17. The German steamer Turin was mined and foundered off Vedieland. The crew were saved. GERMANY STILL HOPEFUL. STATEMENT BY YON TIRPITZ. AMSTERDAM, Juno 17. Admiral von Tirpitz, in a 'message endeavouring to quell grave riots which had broken out in many German centres, including Essen, said:—"The submarines will attain their aim if we at homo do not lose our nervo."
