The seven million souls of America's greatest city combined to paint a brilliant and memorable climax to the American tour of Marshal Joffro, Viviani, and the French War Commission.
With the vision of countless thousands <5f laughing, cheering, weeping, singing, waving humans filling the lanes and festooning the canyons of lower Manhattan. strong beforo them from their initial reception, the war men started a whirlwind tour of Greater New York. In the few, hours that Joffre and hi s ass9ciate3 had been ; n Now York time was found for "Teddy" .Roosevelt to hammer tables wUh ais fists, gesticulate and stamp out his arfuments in favour of an American ivision fighting at t&o front saved by Joffre. And Joffre liked it. He Bmilea his rare, mild smile for T.lfc. in approbation. For, though Joffre speaks ao English, Roosevelt can thunder quite as well in French.
"When Joffre arrived on the north meadow of Central Park to receive the f olden miniatureSStat e of Liberty, the ift of the "people of New York through popular subscription, 6000 school children waving the tricolour and the Stars and Stripes greeted the hero with a great shout. An enormous crowd joined in the demonstration. A little girl dressod in a Zouave uniform, standing close to Joffro. shouted "Vive Francel" The hero of the Marne heard her salutation, took her in his arms andwissed her on both cheeks. Then., turning to Mayor Mitchell, he said in Frencn:-r-"I am profoundly touched by the reiharkable souvenir which, with such delicate attention, you offer me. I am profoundly touched, above all, and I feel the value of this emblem that comes to me from the I pommon people of America —from the ' jjeople as a whole. It will'remind me x>{ my love of America and what Ameilrica has done for France." I New York women gave. Joffre dollars for French rolief.
