Humphries, <jf "Wellington, who is interested in the scheelite mining industry at TVakamarina, complained that the Government has made no attempt to regulate and control the price of materials required in the carrying out of mining preparations. ' Freight has risen from £1 JOs to £G S3 per ton; the price of geliznitc and all other mining materials and 6torea Ilea increased, in somo instances over 300 per cent., and the labour cost of mining liaa also greatly increased owing to the number of miners who have gone to the front, with the insult that notwithstanding tho increased prico paid for scheelite as compared with pre-war pricea tho mine-owners ore in a for worse position to-day than then. At tbo present time the Imperial authorities are paying from 7Cy to 80s per unit, or equal to £2i5 to £XF7 10a per ton, in Portugal; while tho American prico to-day is 35 dollars per unit—equal to £513 per ton. The New Zealand mine-owners kavo recently been offered by English buyers 70s per unit f.o.b. Wel« lington. but the prohibition of export pre- 1 vents the acceptance if the offer, Mr Humphries asserted that the persons, firms, or compani3 in England who convert the sehoclitc into tungstic acid and sell it to the steel manufacturers are making a gross profit per ton of £376.
