« MAGISTERIAL. (Before Mr Wvvcrn "Wilson, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A male first offender was fined ss, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment. FALSE PRETENCES. Cecil Harry Wright (Mr Gresson) pleaded guilty to a number of eharges of obtaining goods and money Bv means of valueless cheques, issued on the Bank of New Zealand. The money involved amounted to £13 12s, and the goods to £2 19s 6d, -while a dog valued at £3 was also among the things obtained by accused. . Chief-Detective Herbert stated that the accused had had an account at tho bank at Oxford, but. although ho received notice from tho bank manager that his account lind been overdrawn, ho still wont on issuing cheques regardless of the fact that there was no money to meet. them. Ho had previously borne a gotid character, but had been three times in a mental hospital. The case, said the Magistrate, was ono which required consideration, and one in which it would be as "well to have accused medically examined. Accused would be convicted, and sentence deferred until June 30th. BY-LAW BREACHES. Thomas Lane, who had failed to stop his motor-car at a crossing when a train was approaching, and had consequently collided -with tho train, was fined 20s and costs. .Tames Prrcy Hayward, who had also failed to pull up when a train was approaching, said that ho had tried to do so, but the brake had failed to act. He was lined 30s and costs. For cycling at night without lights, Percy Mainwaring Banes, William Stanley Brown, and James O'Conuell. were each fined 10s and costs, and Joseoh Thompson, Frederick L. Woolcs. Leslie J. Homcrsham and Thomas Francis Slattery, 5s and costs. George Bryant was convicted and discharged. Arthur Henry Bourne was fined os and costs for riding a motor-car standing at night without lights. Henry Marker was ordered to pay costs for allowing a horse to wander at large. Having ridden on the ' footpath, Charles Churchward and Archibald Gilkinson wore each lined 10* and costs, and Alexander Morrison and Gilbert McGloin each os and costs. (Before Messrs S. Bullock and C. D. Morris, J.IVs.) . ALLEGED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. Iranhoe Price and David Courtney appeared on remand to answer a charge of assaulting Matthew Ryan, and robbing him of £34. On the application of Chief-Inspector Herbert, tho case was further remanded till Wednesday. BY-LAW BREACH. The adjourned ease, in which Emilo &hrender (Mr Cassidy) was charged with riding a motor-cycle without a light at Southbridge on April 25th, was continued. Defendant was fined 10s ] and costs. ' ' i ASHBURTON. (Before Messrs R. Clark and W. ! Oaklev, J.P.'s.) One first offender was fined os and 7s costs, and two other first offenders 10s and 7s costs, each on charges of drunkenness. Ethel May Stringfcllow was fined 10s, and 7s costs, for driving a trap at night without lights. Dr. G. Lyon (Mr Orbell), Joseph Crawford, and Hay Smith, each ordered to pay 7s costs on charges ol' driving motor-cars with dazzling lights. A conviction without fine was entered against Francis Hanrahan for driving a motor-car on the wrong side of a street. John Joseph O'Grady was fined 20s and costs for riding a motor-cycle at night without a light. For .cycling without a light Wm. John Sparrow waa fined 10s, and 7s costs. IT. C. Percy, Annie McDonald, Henry Wharton, Andrew Stewart Christie, John Hunt, Stanley Cross. William Christinas, Henry Allison, 'Victor Field, tfames Sloane, J. McNin, were each fined -"s and 7s costs for riding bicycles at night without lights. Alexander Penny was ordered lo pay 7s costs'-in respect to an unregistered dog.

At the Supreme Court there was only one bill for 'the /rrand jury, and tbnfc was a charge against Robert Melntyre of impersonation in respcct of another brother. John Melntyre, at tho recent municipal elections. The jury returned a verdict of not- guilty, and Melntyre was discharged. Davjd Kdward .Anderson. a ] a( J c f 10, wa* brought up lor sentence for the thel't of £500 from letters whilst ho was employed as letter-carrier. lie was .sentenced to two years' reformative treatment, • A true bill was returned against Melntyre.
