M. Stout. PERSONAL NOTES. Liout.-Coi'oncl Hugh Stewart, M.C., D.5.0., is better known as Professor Stewart, of Canterbury College. Lieut.Colonel Stewart was born in England 31 years ago, and was an M.A. of Cambridgo University, and a lato scholar of Trinity College. "Whilst in England ho was an officer in tho 6th (Rifle) Battalion. In 1912 ho was appointed to the chair of classics at Canterbury Collego in succession to Professor Haslam. "When tho war broke out Lieut.-Colonel Stewart joined the New Zealand Main Expeditionary Force as lieutenant, with tho intention of rejoining his own regiment m England, it being anticipated at that time our men would lie sent to tho Old Country. He was placed in charge of the platoon of A Company, in tho ranks of which woro practically all the students of Canterbury Collego who had joined tho Forco. On tho field ho was promoted to tho rank of captain Ho was wounded at Gallipoli m 1915.

Tv o or • B" r k (To Rangihiroa), D.&.0., is _ well-known in political circles in New Zealand, having represented tho Northern Maori electorate in tho ITouso of Representatives. «-Colonel Jamos W Hutchen, C.M.G., is tho eldest son of Mr James Hutchen, a well-known Wellington resident, a member of the firm of Stewart and Co., timber merchants. Lieut.-Colonel Hutchen belongs to tho Quartermaster-General's branch of the New Zealand Force in England, and took tho place of Lieut.-Coionel J. J. Lsson, when tho latter roturned to New Zealand. "When Liout.Colonel Hutchen joined one of the first contingents to leavo New Zealand, ho was a clerk in an insurance office in Wellington. Major T. I>. M. Stout, D.5.0., bolongs to the New Zealand Medical Corps. He is a son of the Hon. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justico of New Zealand. Colonel G. J. Smith, C.M.G;, is wellknown both as a politician and as a volunteer officer. Colonel Smith is A native of Consett, Durham, "England, and arrived in Lytteltpn in 1879. Ho began his public career in the Sydenham Borough Council, and was returned as one of tho three members of the House of Representatives for Christchurch CTity in 1893. Later he sat for a, term in the Legislative Council. Prior to coming- to the Dominion Colonel Smith was for two years a member of a volunteer corps "in Newcastle, England, and soon after settling in Canterbury he assisted in the formation of the Christchurch Rifles. Moro ! recently he was in command' of tho North Canterbury Infantry Battalion. Colonel Smith is a prominent Methodist. and has "been on several occasions a delegate to the New Zealand annual conference, and, nrior to the separation of New Zealand from the Australian Conference, to the General Conference. For some time Colonel Smith has been absent from the Dominion on duty at Sling Camp, Salisbury Plain.
