Mr O. E. Matthews, Inspector of Prisons, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Justice and Education, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. a Captain Cardale, who has been Chief Instructor Mounted Rifles since the commencement of the war. has resigned that position to proceed, on active service as O.C. Mounted Rifles Reinforcements. Captain Cardale served through the South African War. The Oamaru correspondent of the "Otago Daily Times" Btates that Charles William Reno Nicholls Broglie, who was arrested in Christchurch last week on suspicion of being an. enemy alien, and has been sent to Wellington, has been a resident in the North Otago district for some months. Some time ao-o he leased Redcastle, the residence of the late Mr St. John Buckley, and there he had been a quiet and unostentatious resident with his family. It was generally known that ho was of foreign birth, and the popularly accepted view was that lie was a Frenchman who had taken up his residence here for the period of the war. Ho does not appear to havo said much about himself, but it is stated that when ho came here ho stated that ho was a Russian. No one here suspected him of being an enemy alien.
On Saturday evening, at the residence of Mr G. B. Hill, Hawkesbury avenue, St. .Albans, tho travelling representatives and office staff of the Glinstcimrcli district of the Now Zealand Government Life Insurance Department entertained Mi J. C. Prudhoc, tho late district manager of the Department. Mr Prudhoe, who retired from tho Department on Thursday last, entered the Government service in 1374. Three years later ho joined the Life Insurance Department, and with the exception ol' two or three months at the head office, Wellington, has been connected with tho Christchurch offico for forty years. At the age of twenty-four he became district manager, which position he held for over thirty years. Eulogistic addresses wore delivered by Mr G. B. Hill, for tho offico staff; Mr H. A. Atkinson, for tho present agents; Mr Dennehy, for tho ex-ngents; and Mr H. D. Air drews, as local solicitor to tho Department. The speakers stated that Mr Prudhoo's long connexion with tho ono branch was a unique record in tho annals of the Department. Ho was held in tho highest esteem by those who worked with him, and his kindly consideration for all members of staff, coupled with a strong sense of justice and fair dealing, was tho outstanding feature of his long and successful career. The presentation, which wns made by Mr Hill on behalf of the .donors, consisted of a massive oak dining table and suite to match. The evening concluded with musical and elocutionary items contributed by membors of tho company.
