IMPORTS OF LUXURIES
to tiie EDixon of "the ruESS." Sir, In your leading article on Saturday you most justly oxposed the general extravagance of tho people, at shown in the Statistician's return foi the first quarter of this year. But you seek to minimise the worst form of this —American motor vehicles—and, further, you more ignore perhaps tho major part of the evil —tyre and petrol consumption.. May I ask you to eot out the statistics for 1010; also giving the total value of motor vehicles, tyros, and petrol imported, and wo can then find the true percentage. Wo have a periodical appeal to tho public to economise, first from one Minister and then from another. If they had any sense of tho responsibility of their trust, instead of beating tho air thej would clap on at least 50 per cent, duty. But, from a Ministry thai passes such an excellent law m the anti-shouting one, and then shirks its honourable duty of enforcing it, what can anyone hope for?— Yours, etc.. BRITISHER.
