A cable message announces the death of Edonard do Iteske, tho noted Polish operatic finger. 110 was 61 years of ajjo. Tho Rev. C. Dallaston arrives in Christchurch to-day. He is visiting Canterbury in the interests of the New Zealand Baptist Union, and will preach in the Orford Terrace Church at both services to-morrow.
Mr A. V. Coornbes, of the Postal Department, has been appointed to tho 27th Reinforcements as pcetal clerk, and will leave for Wellington shortly to join his unit.
"Word wae received in Sumner yesterday that Mr J. S. Hines, who 'before leaving for England held the position of captain of die Sumner Lifo Boat Brigade, has been successful in his examinations, and has been appointed first lieutenant.in a warship.
At the Lyttelton District High School yesterday, the pupils of Standards V. and VI. presented Mr W. Adams, -who has been assistant master for some years, and who has received an appointment at Springfield; with a fountain pen. Miss N. H. Curtis read an address expressing appreciation of all Mr Adams had done for them, and the presentation was made by-MTss TJ. G. Sinclair. On behalf of the staff, Mr E. U. Juet presented Mr Adams with a handsome clock, and Mr E. R. Curtis, on behalf of the School Committee, handed him a silver cake dish.
