Orders have been issued to mobilise nine i-egiments, including engineers, to sail shortly for service in. France. THE FIRST CONTINGENT. WASHINGTON. May 7. Tho affair is believed to have been an'accident.
BOLIVIA JOINS THE ALLIES. LONDON, May 7. Bolivia has broken off relations with Germany. DENMARK AND GERMANY, A SECRET ARRANGEMENT. WASHINGTON', May 7. In • tho Ho uso of Representatives, Mr J. \\. Alexander (Missouri) speaking on the German Ship Seizure Bill, disclosed the fact that Denmark had secretly arranged with Germany that the United States should not seize German ships interned in the Danish West Indies. Questioners in the House were refused any information,' further than that the Scandinavian countries had an arrangement with Germany. Tho above message presumably refers to an arrangement made between Germany and Denmark prior io the transfer of the Danish West Indies to the United States. The islands were purchased by the United States sor 25,000,000 dollars, and on March 31st wero formally transferred to tho American Government. After the transfer, the islands took the name ot the Virgin Islands. MESSAGE TO RUSSIA. FROM AMERICAN LABOUR. THE ONLY WAY TO PEACE. (Australian and X.Z. Cr.ble Association.) (Received May nth. 12.00 a.m.) WASHINGTON. May 8. Mr Samuel Gompers, President of the American Federation of Labour, on behalf of tho Federation, ha s sent a message to the Russian Council of Workmen s and Soldiers' Deputies urging co-operation against the Kaiser, who is tho common enemy of democracy.
The message states:—"The American Government has tho support of 90 per cent, of the people, including the working classes, and the only way the Central Powers can attain peace is by abolishing the Hohenzolierns and llapsburgs and driving the tyrannous bureaucracy and military caste from power. Let the German Socialists cease their underground plotting for an abortive peace in the interests of Ka«serism. America, Russia, and the Allies must make common causo to .secure justice and freedom for humanity. -
