FIRE BOARD.
LAST NIGHT'S -MEETING
Tho Christehurch Fire Board met last night. Present: —Mr H. Holland (chairman I *, and Messrs J..F. Grierson, A. Williams, H, P. Hopkins, and W. H. Cooper.
The Kxecutivc Committee reported that at the urgent request of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, it had hired outthe steam lire pump at .{.'lo per month.
The action of the executive was approved, and it was reported that tho engine had been returned. .Messrs Turn bull inul Jones wrote stating that they could not accept the oiler of £3 2 10s in full settlement of their account, aud t.hey suggested that the matter be submitted to arbitration
Tlie Hoard did not fall in with the suggestion, and it tvas dccidcd to withdraw tho oiler, without prejudice.
In cDnserjijence of the Railway .'Depnrtment declining to pay a retaining fee for the protection of the Addington Railway Workshops, the Board decided to point out that the shops were outside the fire area, and that therefore it could not undertake the work of attending a* fire there if one broke out. under the circumstances. With regard to the street fire alarm system, it was resolved to make arrangements for a conference between Mr L. Birks, Mr E. E. Stark, and Superintendent Warner to discuss tho whole matter and report to the Board. Tho Superintendent reported that during the past fortnight four calls had been received, one being outside the district. The estimated fire loss was £226. He protested against the City Council's proposal to fill in tho tank opposite Goss's timber mill. Authority was asked to asphalt the centre drill yard and right-of-way at the Central station, and also to procure rubble for St. Albans and headquarters stations. He recommended that the tyres for tho Aster motor be renewed. The report went on to .elaborate a scheme for tho extension of the fire area, but the Board decided to defer consideration of this .subject until a subsequent meeting. With regard to tho filling-m of water tanks, it was decided to respectfully request the City Council to reconsider its decision, as* theso reservoirs -were valuable emergency supplies in case of a breakdown of the high-pressnro system. , . . . It was decided to hold over decision as to the asphalting until the Board had mnde an inspection of the places mentioned. A resolution of congratulation "was passed to his Worship the Mayor at being once again chairman of tho Board, and a further resolution of thanks for his long period of excellent and valuable work wa.s passed to Mr AY. H. Cooper.
