CASUALTIES
An inquest was held at Ashburton last night, before 31r Wyvcm Wilson, Coroner, touching the death of an <Jdago pensioner nainod John Moore Smith, "who had been working as a blacksmith for Mr W. J. 13. McDowell. Hmds, and who had been found dead in a wliar© on Sunday. From tho | evidence it appeared that Smith was last seen alive in tho wliaro about noou on Saturday, when ho appeared to bo under the influence of liquor. Ho hadcomplained of not being well several. days before his death. A verdict was returned that death was duo to natural causes, and had probably been aecdorated through his # having taken an undue quantity of liquor. (press association telegram.) ATJCKLAKD, May 7. Vera Jean Davies, aged 9 years, died in the hospital to-< Jay as tho rosalt of a kick on tho head by a, horse on Tuesday.
