BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KICCARTON. Before tho ordinary general meeting of tho Riccarton Borough Council commenced last night tho Mayor and Councillors were formally installed. There were present—Tho Mayor (Mr J. Brown), Councillors W. Dalley, A. Hampton, H. W; Wise, J. H. Stokes, A. D. Ford, J, Munnings, A. F. Steere, and H. Gudeell. The Mayor said that as they had all been re-elected there was little to say, but he thanked councillors for their co-operation in. the past. t Councillor J. Munnings congratulated tbo Mayor on tho smooth manner in which the Council's affairs had run in the past, and expressed his best wishes for tho iuture. The general business was then proceeded •with. All tho committees were re-elcctcd. Councillor Ford moved, "That th© Waimari County Council be 'written to pointing out that tho drainage in Riccarton road is in anything but a desirable state." Tho motion was carried. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £116 2s lid should be passed for payment, and reported receipts since last financial statement £771 2s 2d, and expenditure £223 17s 7d. NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhito) and Councillors C. H. Winny, A. W. Owles, E. M. Leaver, J. Buxton, C. Israelson, A. M. Chiver3, F_ Sincock, It. Browning, and F. ix. Christian. The Mayor moved the following resolution, which was carried in silence, members standing:—"That this Council learns with deep regret of the death of Rifleman W. Bellamy and Private Cyril Cooke, who have made the supreme sacrifice in the service of their country, and extends to Mr and Mrs Bellamy and to Mr and Mrs Cooke its deopeet sympathy in their great loss." Resolutions of sympathy were also passed to Mr W. H. Porter in tho death of his wife, and Mr and Mrs George Brown, in the death of their son." It was decided to accept the invitation of tho Fire Brigade to attend its annual meeting next Monday, and also the invitation of tho Rev. H. H. Maxhias to attend a church, service on a date to bo arranged. Mr S. G. Page, secretary of the C.W.1., wrote on behalf of tho institute asking the Council to refuse to part with any .portion of its reserves for school purposes. The letter was referred to tho Reserves Committee. An application for a name board for Richmond terrace was referred to the Works Committee. It was decided, on the suggestion of the Mayor, that tho whole Council should begin its inspection of the borough next Saturday, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The following committees were elected: — Finance and By-laws—Councillors Christian (chairman). Browning. Sincock, and Chivers. Works and Sanitation —Councillors Winny (chairman), Owles, Leaver. Buxton, and Israelson. Lighting. Reserves, and Fire Brigade— Councillors Israelson (chairman), Browning, Owles, and Winny.
SUMNEK. The fortnightly meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C.), Councillors T. E. Whitfield. W. J. Lawson, A. Senior, C. Benjamin, J. H. Gibbs. F. R. Piercy, H. C. Jamieson, and T. DrybuTgh. The 'Sumner Fire Brigade wrote, applying for tho installation of <Jectric at the RcdcliEs fire station. Tho application was referred to tho Lighting Committee. The brigade also asked for the free ti&> of the Town Hall, which was granted on tho usual conditions. Mr A. F. Drayton thanked the Council for the' help extended to him white, he was acting as secretary to the Redcliffs Public Library. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, stating that tho levy on the borough for the enduing year amounted to £476 9e Id as against £43G 7s 8d last year, showing an increase of £40 3h 3d. The question of reappointing a ranker for the borough was referred to the Finance Committee. On the motion of tho Mayor, it was decidisd to utilise tlv> £100 which had been included in the estimates for the past year, to securo adequate plot's of the whole borough, and th© Town Clerk bo authorised to secure them. Councillor Fir.rcy referred to the accumulation of storm wat<>r at the corner of Morton and Grafton streets during the recent heavy rainfall, and it was decided to refer the matter to tho 'Works Committee for consideration.
