The Allied Conference has opened. M. Clementcl, Minister of National Economy, in welcoming the AngloItalian delegates said: —"The war has united us for the common safeguard. It is a war for a peace which will guarantee us against any return of primeval fcrocity, instead of the former precarious peace of a world living under perpetual threats." Ho paid a tribute to the way England had tackled and solved all the problems of the war, and added: "America's intervention at tho decisive hour brings, like a, thunderbolt, a contribution of cold iron and blood. We shall fight to the end on tho battlefield and in the economic fiold.''
31. Ribot, Minister of Finance, said: "Tt no longer remains with the Germans to initiate an attack. Despite the enemy calling up all his reserves, they are doubling tinder our grip. America's entry gives the certainty of ultimate victory, and Germany feels this will bo so. "We truly desire peace as much as anyone, but -sv<ydo not desire a peace which -will leave nintouchcd the problems from which the -war sprang, which the war must solve. We have not stoically accepted so - many sacrifices merely in order that our children should he compelled to struggle again to-morrow, "We don't dream of oppressing any people, not even, oar present enemies. After the -war we shall not summon revenge to our arid, but justice, pure and simple." CLOSING CONFECTIONERY SHOrS. PAHIS, May 4. The oonfeefcionery shops aro being compulsorily closed. An official report states: —The loan subscriptions total 6,347,000,000 lire, besides the amount subscribed by Italians abroad.
CHINA DECIDES. WILL DECLAIMS WAR ON GERMANY. CABINET'S DECISION UNANIMOUS. (Received Mav 6th, 5.5 p.m.) PEKING, May 5. The Cabinet unanimously carried a resolution in favour of an immediate declaration of war on Germany.
