Mrs K. E. Gabrielsen, of Wakefield <iuay, Port Nelson, has boon advisecl that her son, Rifleman Charles M. Gabrielsen, has been discharged irom the forces in order that he might enter the Royal Navy. Sergeant -J. Chadwick, Wellington Mounted Rifles, whose name appears in the latest list of recipients of' the D.C.M., is a son of Mr Joseph Chadwick, the well-known Pressman--'"Spectator," of the "New Zealand Referee." When he enlisted m one of the early reinforcement drafts. Sergeant Chadwick was farming with ins brother at- Taumarunui.
The Earl of Rosebery, Iv.G., who used to bo called the "silver-tongued orator of the Empire,'' is 70 years old to-dav, having been born on May 7 th, 1847.* It is 23 wars since he succeeded Mr Gladstone as Prime Minister of ■England, and during his sixteen months' tenure of that high position, ho twice won the English Derby first with Ladas in 1894, and the following year with Sir Visto.
Mr J. B. Erskinc has been appointed permanent secretary of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr Erskine, who is a young man, married, with considerable clerical experience, fought in Gallipoli with tho Scottish Light Infantry, and was severely wounded in the spine at Cape Holies in July, 1915. Ho was invalided home to Scotland, and has only recently come out to New Zealand.
Corporal A. W. Brown, who went away with the Main Body, and fought thro'ugh tho Gallipoli campaign and is now in Franco, has been awarded tho I>.C.M. "for conspicous gallantry in action. Ho established and maintained communications, and frequently repaired wires under very heavy fire." Corporal Brown was, prior to enlisting, on the staff of the Wanganui Telegraph Office, and was very prominent in athletic circles, especially as a footballer, being a member of the Pirates Club and a representative player.
Mr W, H. Cocker (son of tho Rev. J. Cocker, of Christchurch) who was formerly associate to tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), and who is now a member of tho 29th Reinforcements, was at Wellington on Saturday admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court, on the motion of Air D. S. Smith. Mr Smith, formerly a partner in the firm of Morison and Smith, and who is also a member of tho 29th Reinforcements, appeared in Court in uniform in .making the application. His Honour the Chief Justice was on the Bench.
Mr W. G. Morpeth, of Wellington, who recently returned from the front, after receiving wounds which resulted in tho loss of one eye and injury to tho other, has been elected a member of the 'Wellington Stock Exchange, having purchased the seat of tho late Mr A. Meliss Stuart, who was killed in action in France. Mr Morpeth was a member of the First New Zealand Body sent on active service. After spending several months at Samoa, ho returned to New Zealand, and left again with tho Fifth Reinforcements. He was on Gallipoli for some months, and afterwards went to France, where he received the injuries which necessitated his return to New Zealand.
Six sons of Mr W. H. Haswell. of Auckland, nro serving in his Majesty's forces. John Haswell has boon serving in the Royal Navy for tho last ]8 voars. Trooper Hurry Haswell left New Zealand with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force fought through tho Gallipoli campaign, ana is at -prosent with the Auckland Mounted Rifles in Egypt. Sergeant William Haswell went away with the earliest reinforcement draft, aiid is now with the New Zealand Field Artillery in France. Corporal 7>rinnmond Haswell also fought at Gallipoli, and is now in the Auckland Mounted Rifles in Egypt. Trooper Tui Haswell is also with the same corps, and Bert. Haswell, the last male member of the household, is now on his way to the front.
