METHODIST DEACONESS INSTITUTION. The committee of the Methodist Deacon--063 Institution met on Friday last and sanctioned the appointments of Sister Constance Old* to Kaiapoi, Sister Emily Hall to the Methodist Orphanage at Papamii, Sister Constancy Ashby to Masterton, Sister Edith Goodall to Maima, where she will labour among the Maoris, under the direction of tlio Home Minion Board. Sister Florence, of Sydenham, gave noticc of her intention to enter the C'hristchurch Hospital for training as a nurse, and oho was heartily congratulated on the step eh© is about to talio to qualify herseif for enlarged service.
1 SUIIILEI' SCHOOL O.OMMITTEE. The monthlv meeting of the Shirley School Committee was held on Thursday night, when there were present.—Messrs Beanland (chairman), Griffen, Thompson, Hope, Lorimer. McClaekie, Robinson, Neileoit, and Mrs McKay (secretary). It was decided to forward to thi Education Board "the xeeohitions passed at the annual householders meeting regarding more land for the school. Messrs Thompson, McClaskie, and Griffen : were appointed delegates to tho School Committees' Association. Messrs Thompeon, (j riff en, and Lorimer vrer® appointed the Entertainment Committee and Mrs McKay and Miss Newton were appointed a ladies' committee for tie &ame, with power to add to thoix number, Mr McDonald, a resident of ; the district, offered to hold a pieties benefit | in aid of the school funds, and tho Enteri tainment Committee were instructed to inj lorview him on the matter. Mr Bates reported that in company with Mr Se4h-Smith ! lie canvassed the farmers at the ealejrards on ! It waa unanimously decided to mako a special effort to secure the balance required to comI ploto the amount before May 20th in view :of the fact that a well-known citizen of | Timaru, who had given £50 to the fund,' had promised half the cost of a sccond machine conditional upon the total amonnt for one machine being collected by May 20th.
