BOROUGH COUNCILS.

The final meeting of tho Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. H. Blackwell), and Councillors W. Doubleday, S. Rinaldi, H. Molntoeh, J. .Brydcn, L. B. Evans, P. R. Leithead, R. Dunn, R. H. Croft, and H. C. Re veil. Motions o* evmpathy with the relatives of Private J. H. Keetlev, killed in action, and Lance-Corporal A. Gray, wounded, were carried. A letter was received, from the New Zealand Acetylene Gog Co., notifying that carbide was unobtainable, owing to tie present •unsettled state of shipping. It was reported that the gas consumers had been advised that unless additional supplies could be obtained, the light would be cut off next Saturday or Sunday. The annual report and balance-sheet of* the Volunteer Fire . Brigade was received from the Brigade Superintendent, showing a satisfactory year's working. On the recommendation of the works Coramittea, it was decided to call for tenders for the annual supply of shingle. The Finance Committee reported receipts £183 4s 6d, overdraft £632 Is lit!/ accounts £4G lis Cd. . ' Tho proposed estimate® fer the year ending Maroh 31st, 1318, were submitted by the Finance Committee and adopted, tho general rate being estimated tho same as last year, Is lOd in tho £. On the motion of the Mayor, it wan decided unanimously that hearty votes of thanks be accorded to Cre. Rovell, Rinaldi, and Croft for the services rendered by them as members of the Council, they not seeking re-elec-tion Votes of thanks were also accorded the members of the Library Committee and tho officers and committee of the Swimming Club, for the assistance given by them during the year. ,

Kerr, and J>\ Fcrriman— suitably replied. The following motion was carried:—"That this Council inform tho Government that it strongly disapproves of the action of tho miners in goins on «trik© to enforce the repeal of ib« Military Service Act, and pledges its loyal support in any measures tho Government might deem advisable to take to overcome any difficulties arising from tho threatened trouble."
