NORTH BRIGHTON GALA.

A SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR, North Brighton held its first gala on Saturday under most auspicious circum- j stanccs, for though tho weather was ■ cold, and tho ovening before threatened , adverse elements, the sun shone forth jubilantly, and the clouds retreated to tho distant horizon. The gala was promoted by the North Brighton Surf and Life-saving Club (a branch of the New Brighton Surf Club), in aid of their I new pavilion, which has cost over £300 to erect, and as the result of Saturday's successful effort a substantial sum will be secured towards assisting in ; wiping off tho debt on the bunding. | The cash receipts amounted to £130, . and tho tramway returns are expected | to yield between £25 and £40. There I wag a large attendance of the public | at the gala, and many attractions wero : provided for them, including sand tie- ' signing competitions, land races, life j saving competitions, a fire brigade com- , petition, and Maori poi songs and 1 danccs by 30 Maori ladie-s and children. | In tho evening a bonfire was lit on tho i beach, and a concert held on the Ozone I Cafe roof. j At 2.30 p.m. the club's pavilion was formally opened by Mr J. A. Flesher, Mayor of New Brighton. During the j afternoon, S. F. Alp© lowered his fivo j mile New Zealand record walk, the coureo being 2J- miles north of the pavilion and back. Ho covered the distance in 45min 2 4-sth sec, his previous record being 45min 33 2-sth sec. Fol- ( lowing are the results of tho various ' events held' during the afternoon: — i Life Saving Competition—New Brighton, 91 point 3, 1; Sumner, 86 points 2; Taylor's Mistake, S3 points. 3. North Beach, 74 points, also competed. Tho winning team was: B. F. Coulter. C. A. Cooper, G. L. Bull B. S. Knox (captain), C. T. Mcsley, F. L. Collins, A. G. Pratt. C. H. Miller (reserve and assistant instructor). Fire Brigade Competition (one man coupling)— Fireman Macpherson (Addington Workshops) 1.
