Dr Pinfold. . who has been practising in Kaiapoi for some months, has received notion that his services are required by the military authorities on Thursday nc.xt. Mr Alick Graham, the well-known Alpine guide, of Wcstland. who was drawn in the second hallct, enlisted Borne months ago, and has been in the Awapuni camp for some weeks. The absence of Mr Sidney Williamson. the principal soloist of the Festival of New Zealand Music choir, from Sunday's sacrcd concert in the Domain gardens, was duo to sudden indisposition. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs H. Holland) are leaving Cliriftehurch on Saturday on a short tour of tho Southern Lakes District. It is tho first liolidav Mr Holland has had during his term of office. At the examination held at Christ's College on th© sth and 6th inst. for the entrance scholarship, there wero eight entries. The successful competitor was R. P. Fish, of tho District High School, Lawrence, E. V. Colgpn, of East Christchurch School, being second. In a cubic message to a Hunterrillo friend, Lieutenant-Colonel _ Meldrum mentioned that he was leaving for five weeks' furlough in England. This is the first furlough from either the field or Egypt, that the colonel has received '• joining up" when the war first started. Yesterday the Mayor of Christchurch received the following telegram from Sir Ernest Shaekleton, in Wellington: — "J. much regret that urgent business has kept me in Wellington to tho last moment, apd I cannot have the plea« sure and honour qf meeting you at a 'civic reception. I will, however, take advautecc of your invitation when I return from the South, and will revive the pleasant memories of much kindness received in your city on former occasions." Information has been, received that Sergeant. Alfred James Tiddv, son of Mr A. Tiddv. of Newborougfi. North Otaco, who went away with the Sixth Ileinforcements with the? rank_ of sergeant. has received a commission as lieut""nnt. It i.s stated that Lieutenant Tiddy could have obtained promotion previously tinder conditions involving his leaving the field for some time, and that lie refused a commission unless he recoijxd it-in the field. The point I'jis now been conceded by the authorities
