YOUTH DROWNED.
BATHING ACCIDENT AT SUMNER. BODY NOT RECOVERED. Shortly alter t- o'clock yosterdgy afternoon a drowning fatality occurred at Stunner, whereby Leo Dobbs, sixteen years of age. who resided with his parents in Salisbury street, Christchurch, lost his life. The boy, who was a good swimmer, was bathing in the Estuary near the end of the pier, and was apparently trying to depth the water, when he threw up his arms and disappeared. The tide was low at the time, with a strong outgoing current. An alarm was sounded, and Constable Hampton with two members of the Lifeboat Brigade—R. Piercy_ and H.J. Marrincr —launched the dinghy, and by means of a long pole and otner apparatus tried to recover the body, but v.ithout succcss. Dragging operations were kept up for some time, but were eventually abandoned. The place where the accident happened is a notoriously dangerous one, owing to the river cutting out a deep bank, which causes a sudden drop from shallow to very deep water. The accident happened in the view of hundreds of holiday-makers, and cast a gloom over the beach.
