Bolt, engineer to the Westport Harbour Board, intends to apply lor leave of absence, with the object of enlisting in the New Zealand Forces for service abroad. Mr C. B. Tbacker, of Okain's Bay,' who was drawn in the second, ballot, enli'-ted some time ago, and. his nano should have been "starred" in the published list. Mr F. Denton, Town Clerk at Greymouth, has been granted of absence in order to enlist. His father, Mr J. 11. Denton, has been appointed to temporarily fill the position. Mr Frank o'Sullivan, representative of the Ilayal Dramatic and Comedy Company, has arrived ill Christchurch to make arrangements for the company's < er.son here, commencing on Boxing night. Mt G. R. Beamish, of Whana Whsna station. Hastings, has been advised that his eldest sou, Captain Noel Beamish, of the Ist. Battalion Warwickshire Regiment, has been awarded the Military Cross.
'We are informed that Murdoch Keith MeLeod, Fairfield avemie, ChriVtohurch, architect, -whose name was drawn in the second ballot, ha 3 been in camp for the past nine month*?, and lias now obtained his commission as a licutenanj.
Bombardier Harry Mole, soil of Mrs Mole, Marine Parade, Napier, has been awarded tlvn Military Medal for conspicuous gallantly in the field. Bombardier Mole left with the Main Body, and is at present in hospital in England. having been wounded in France.
Mr Justice Denniston has received a cable message informing him that his son, Second-Lieut. J. Geoffrey Denniston, who has since fi?s promotion been in camp in Ireland with tho reserve of his regiment (King Edward's Horse), has again gone to France.
In the list of those drawn in the second ballot appears the name of 'Orratjby G. It. Barnes, Bury street, Sumner, soldier." This is Captain O. 0. R. Barnes, of the Royal WarwickRent Regiment. Captain Barnes was stationed in India on the outbreak of war, and served with his regiment in Mesopotamia. He was invalided some considerable time ago, and returned to Christchurch, and lived in Sumner until he was fit for service again. Then ho rejoined his regiment, and ho is again in Mesopotamia. While in Sumner, Captain Barnes was associated with the Sumner Unit of the Citizens' Defence Corps.
o*»r Invcrcargill correspondent telegraphs:—lt is understood that Air C. J. Ronaldson, manager of the National Hank here, has been appointed manager at Christchurch, and the change will probably be made in February. Mr F. S. Scamon, at present a member of the inspecting staff, will come to Invcrcargill. Mr R-onaldson, during his 84 years' stay here, has prominently Identified himself with public movements, and has been an activo patriotic worker. • He was president of tho Chamber of Commerce for ono year and a member of the Southland League, and is president of the St. John Ambulance Association. He -will be greatly missed here also, as an enthusiastic committeman and playing member of the Golf Club.
