Progress of the War.
The sensational move towards peace made by the Central Powers has diverted attention in the past few days from the various battle-fronts. This
has mattered the less 6ince nothing of note has occurred upon any battlefield. To-day, however, a reminder is given that the Balkan position is still the most important in immediate, operations as two battles of some moment are recorded. The Russians report having fought a stubborn battle west of Buzeu, but as they omit to record the result, and as the enemy claims to have continued his advance, it may be assumed that in spite of its stubborn nature this battle was not a success for the Russians. The Russians and Roumanians, however, are now well established on good lines, and there should be but little further withdrawal on their part. On the southern Balkan front greatly-increased enemy activity is reported in the neighbourhood of Monastir. The whole front and the town itself was bombarded. This may possibly herald that large-scale activity on the part of the enemy which has long been expected in this quarter. The Grecian tangle has still not been unravelled, but there is some prospect of action in t>ho announcement by Lord Robert Cecil in the House of Commons that the Allies are about to present demands to Greece to elear up tho unsatisfactory position at present obtaining. It is sincerely to be hoped that the Allies' action will hav e that resnlt.
