ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL

Tho annual breaking-up cercmony and distribution of prizes in connexion with the Ashburton High School took place yesterdayafternoon, in the presence of a large attendance. Mr J. Tucker, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided, and m Jus opening remarks made special reference ° •the valuo of scientific agricultural education, and to the. experiments which, were now being carried out under "the supervision ot the Agricultural Department on the experimental area handed oveT to tho Govern men by the Ashburton High School Board. Mr Armitage (a member of tho Canterbury Education Board) briefly addressed the gathering, and thanked the Board cf Governors for having given him tho pleasure of being present. He congratulated tho stag an<l tho school generally on the good, results which-had- been attained during the past rear, and thought they should all be proud of their school. The school had a big future before it, and tho yalue of truo cducation should reoeive their cloee attention. He also referred to tho great advantage which would result through an experimental agricultural farm having been established at Ashburton, and thanked the Ashburton •County Council for its generous donation towards the work -which was being carried out. I The headmaster CMr Watters) then read j the annual report, of winch the following 19 a summuy:— , , OQ Tho enrolment for the year liad been IJS (79 boys and 49 girls). Of last year s roll, 40 boys and 30 girls had returned, while 30 boys and 19 girls were admitted. len pupils paid fees, tho remainder being free place holders, and sis scholarship holders. The -usual number of candidates for the various examinations wero being presented this year, and in addition two candidates for the Royal Militaxy Collego examination. There had been an. average of 11 boarders in the Rectory for Jjc , year. A forward movement had been made in connexion with tho teaching o! agriculture at the school, the Board having appointed Mt H. H. Allan, M.A., formerly Senior Agricultural Science Master in. the Waitaki Boye' High School, to the position of Agricultural Science Master. Mr Allan •would also have charge of recording the results ot experiments on the experimental farm area. It was hoped that the Board's progressivonoes iu providing the best tyP® of agricultural education would be rewarded by adequate sunport from those who would reap the benefits, namely, the farming community of the Ashburton County. The existence of this course and of the domestic science course should satisfy tho Minister of Education that in the Ashburton High School provision was not lacking for the, vocational training that he has so much at heart. To meet tho demand for a preparatory department the Board was opening a preparatory school in February, and Mies V. Humphreys had been appointed mistress. The Old Pupils Association had organised a most successful cafo chantant, by wjiicfc n»ans tho sum. of £1300 was raked foT the Wounded Soldiers and Red Cross Funds.
