In the Prahran Court (Melbourne) last, week, John Plisch, a pastrycook, was'charged, firstly, with having failed to keep his premises free from vermin ; secondly, with having failed to keep his premises clean; and, thirdly, with having sold an unwholesome buh, iji wjiich a mouse? was discovered. Fines of £10 each were imposed in the first two charges. The Magistrate said it was a case for a maximum penalty. The third charge was dismissed, on the ground that Plisch could not reasonably have known of the mouse. Costs, amounting to 265, were allowed. The national secretary of the United Federation of Labour (Mr Hiram Hunter) has received the'results of two ballots taken of the members of the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries' Union, Waihi. last Saturday. On the question of an amalgamation of all quartz miners. the voting was: For 366, against 100, majority for, 266, informal votes 26. On the question of affiliating with the United Federation of Labour, the voting was: For 344, against 130. majority for 214, informal votes 19.
