ANNUAL MEETING. ( ' \ The annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was. hold last'evening, the president (Mr L. Birks) presiding over a fair attendance. Various donations to the library were announced by the eecretary, and acknowledged with thanks. The annual report stated that ten meetings of the council -were held during the year, -and that two members of the council,. Messrs A. M. Wright and G. E. Archey, have gone on active service. Twelve meetings of the Institute were held, at which 24 papers were read—zoology 6, botany 2, geology 5, engineering 2, chemistry G. mathematics 1, and general 2. During the year ten new members were elected and one was transferred; the present roll number ia 181. The following members are on active service:—Dtb. H. Aoland and F. G. Gibson, Meters G. E. Archey, F. M. Corkill, A. Fair bairn, C. E. Fokeraker, G. Maclndoe, P. S. Nelson, F. S. Oliver A. Taylor. Geo. T. "Weston, F. S. Wilding, and A. M. Wright. The council records with regret that four members died during the year—Mrs Hutton,- Mr T. H. Jackson, and, in action, Captain L. S. Jennings and Lieutenaat H. Lang. Lieutenant L. J. Wild moved in the'dixectdon of a recommendation to the incoming council of having .in future more frequent meetings of the Institute, and. also of getting the transactions <4 the Institute published earlier than heretofore. Mr R. Speight entered a plea for the production of a Scientific Quarterly, .which he considered would be of manifest advantage to tho Institute, and would warrant the necessary additional expenditure. "* Lieutenant Wild's first motion was adopted, and the second was, as in the case of the other, recommended to. the favourable consideration of _ rhe incoming council. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr L. Birks; vicepresidents, Dr. Borne and Mr P. H. Powell; hon. eecretary, Mr L. P. Symes; treasurer, Dr. Chas. Chilton; librarian, Mr E; G. Hogg; council, Dr. S. C. Farr,- Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf, and Messrs A. D. Dobson, S. Page, H. T. Ferrar, and W. Goldridge; auditor, Mr G. E. Way;. representatives on the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, Mr A. M. Wright: and Dr. Hileendorf. A vote of thanks- was passed *lo 'the Board of Governors of Canterbury College for the us© of rooms during the past year. Subsequent to the business .proceedings of the meeting, the following papers were read: —"Some Structural Features of North-East Canterbury, together with Lists of Fossils from the Greta Beds," by Bev.
