SOLDIERS AND THE LAND.
Tho Advisory Board of the War Relief Societies had before it at Friday's meeting the following communication from Ashburton:—
1. Under tho Discharged Soldiers Act, applications for land mast be mado by the men themselves, no provision being made for application by an agent. This does not seem fair to men on active service, who, however, are given the right to apply through an agent for land thrown open in the usual way. A block of land might be thrown open under the above Act, dose to the residence of a man on active service, and lie should certainly have an opportunity of obtaining a section through the agency of his relative or friends.
2. Can you tell me wbethe r an enlisted man, not yet in camp, lia 8 any sort of protection from his creators? 3. I have had a couple of complaints irom relatives of sick men who hare been summoned to Wellington by telegram, and have been refused admission to the camp on the authority of th# telegram alone, a pass from the Dcfenco Office being demanded.
