OBITUARY.

MR E. HARRINGTON

An old and highly respected Akaroa resident passed away last week in the person of Mr Edward Harrington. Born in Essex, England the year before Queen Victoria's accession to the throne, the late Mr Harrington arrived in Akaroa in the Monarch in 1850. He worked in various capacities, eventually taking up a block of land in Takamatua (German Bay), which he farmed successfully until he retired, some ten years ago, to live in Akaroa. He leaves a widow and two sons. It is interesting to note that Mr Harrington's marriage, April 14th. 1863, was the first solemnised in the present Anglican Church. Akaroa, and that his wife, who ""'as Miss Breitmever, and who was 75 years old last September, claims to be the first white girl born in Canterbury.

A very old resident and public servant. in the_ person of Mr Richard Larkin, of Nelson Creek, died on Saturday. at the Grey River Hospital. He was a native of Tipperary, and 74 years of age. When quite a young man he left Ireland for Australia, and after a stay on the Victoria goldfields lie was attracted to New Zealand by the report of the discovery of gold in Otago. From Otago ho came to the West Coast, and ultimately settled at Nelson Creek, where he had been mining at Try Asrain Terrace for the"past forty years. He took a. prominent part in public life, being a member of the Grey Connty Council, of,which body he was chairman on several occasions,*and represented the Nelson Creek Riding continuously for the past 26 years. He was also a member of the Grev Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and Westland Licensing Committee. He leaves a widow.
