The "Sunday TimcW commenting on Sasanof'n victory in the Mclbourno Cup, doscribes it. as the easiest, ever won. The New Zealatider was. nicely plated in the raco. At tho bend he ran wide to clear the field, and entered the straight first. From this out the issue was never in doubt, tho New Zealandcr coming along at case, increasing the daylight between himself and the struggling, but hopelessly beaten, favourite, Shepherd King. During tho week there were disquieting rumours concerning Sasanof s condition, which caused him to recado in popular fa/vour, but with tho luxurious light-weight, ho was simply too good for anything clso in tho race. When Sasanof had passed tho post ho looked as if another mile would not liavo troubled him. Many previous Melbourne Cups have been won comfortably, but seldom has a winner succeeded with more in hand than Sasanof had. llis jockey, F. Foley, said it was the first ride .he had had for the horse's present owners. He had a good ride. Although bumped after going a furlong, otherwise lie had a clear run. Folev added ho was most afraid of Shepherd King and Wolaroi. QUEENSLAND CUF. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received November 12th, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 11. The victory of Sasanof in the Melbourne Cup was apparently a brilliant and most convincing one, iy]jk-h must fio far to increase the prestige. of Nc.v Zealand-bred raccliorses. Ibc groat achievement of the young .Martian gold, ing will Vie hailed with delight in th<; Dominion. ]t was the third .Melbourne Cup ".von bv a New Zealand-hred horse. Carbine, in 1890, -was the firs-t to succeed. then Apologue followed in 190.. Sasanors Cup was also a fitting reward for the enterprising young Dominion sportsman. Mr YV. G. Stead, who went to Australia for the Soring racing campaign, to emulate the tine example of his father, the late Mr Geo. G. .Stead, wHo achieved such a striking success with the fine striae of hors<s he '-invaded the Australian Turf with in IDOo. when he "scooped the pool :1 at the Kandwuk Spring Meeting of that reason. .Mr W. G. Stead hub improved 011 his father's proud record by capturing not onlv the*A.J.C Derby, but the greatest handicap race in the Commonwealth Calendar with SaF.inof, beside., other good races t_his worthy ton ot

Martian. Now Zealand's premier siro, and the smart mare Sweet Corn. lfc is a happy eoincidcncc that while Mr "Wilfred Stead has been meeting with unique succor in Australia, his brother. Mr G. L. Stead, has achieved great things on the New Zealand Turf with The Toff, a brilliant young gelding who was bred by tho two brothers when they were in racing partnership. The Toff has proved himself a particularly ■useful performer, because within one week lie has won a "triple crown" in capturing the New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Cup. and Stoad Gold Cup, over di&t.v.iees from one mile and a quarter to tw» miles and a quarter. The last, named racc is>, of rource, a memorial to the estimable sportsman whose sterling example his two sons are following n>s patrons of the Turf, and it is worthy of no to that the. Gold Cup was decided over ,-i course the late Mr Geo. G. Stead considered the ideal distance (ten furlongs) to most severely test a good horse.

The Va.rcn gelding Sedd-el-Bahr has been purchased by Mr Hugo Friedlander. Ho raced through the recent Kiccarton Meeting in the interests of tho Ilighcjcn stable, but will leave for Dunediu ta join C. Gictclcr's string at Wingatui. Mr T. H. Lowrv • disposed of two of his horses at Riccarton on Saturday. Marco Bello, the Metropolitan Handicap winner, was sold to Messrs Balfour and Rutherford, while Balboa was purchased by Mr F. A. Price, part-owner of Rorke's Drift.

J. O'Shea iva,s cautioncd after tlic Pioneer Handicay> on Saturday by the C.J.C. stewards for his conduct at the start, of tho race. So was up on Ample. Referring to tho defeat of Bee in tho Moonee Valley Cup, the Melbourne "Age" says:—"Bee was made rather too much use of by McFlynn, though but for the saddle slipping at a critical stage of tho race, she must have scored as it was." This was perverse lurk for the game and consistent daughter of .Martian. The same writer, in describing the Welter Handicap at Mooneo Valley, remarks:—"New Zealand was represented by Zuland, a stable mate of Bee, and by Shrill, ail imported mare by Llangwm, who was brought from England to the Dominion by Mr Stead, with tho ultimate object of being sent to tho stud. An impression got abroad that sho was a bit out of tho common, nntl a& Frank Dempsey was up, she was very solidly supported. But she ran nowhere. Zuland, who has given the Sydney racegoers several examples of his excellence, was quite overlooked in the anxiety to get ozl to Shrill, and this son of tho ex-Victorian Finland and Disappointment was allowed to go out at a fairly long price. Ridden by McFlynn, who, it must be conceded, is a very able, allround jockey, ranging from steeplechasing ■to flat-racing, Zuland, after waiting on the leaders to well into tho straight, enmo through and won cleverly from another outsider in tho Sydneysider Lavanda, a stable mate of Aurifer." The trotter Brown's Nugget has been sold to Mr "VY. G. Abbott for lOOgs, and goes to Auckland. Messrs Fleming and lies bought Hardy Wilkes on Saturday for 600gs.
