"NAVY DAY."

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

A meeting of tho committee set up by tho Navy League in connexion with tho celebration of Trafalgar Day was held yesterday afternoon. Present —Mr A. Boyle (president), Mesdames Boyle, Free, and Robinson. Colonel H?. S. E. Hobday. Professor T. G. R. Blunt, and Messrs H. S. Batcholor, H. Holland. E. Nordon, J. Bosworth. and H. R. Smith. An apology was received ■ from Mrs Blunt.

The chairman referred to the proposal that a portion of tho proceeds of Navy Day should bo devoted to the funds of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, and pointed out that the headquarters of the League, in London had recommended that, there should be co-operation between the two organisations. Ho thought it would be smallminded on their part to raise any opposition to tho proposal. Mr Marriner said that the executive had arrived at a resolution that the proceeds of Nnvy Day ahould go to the Naval Dependants' Fund, but with tho consent of his seconder (Colonel Hobday) ho was prepared to move for the rescinding of tho resoiution.

Professor Blunt pointed out that a number of the sailors of the mercantile marine were employed by the Navy as minesweepers, and wore, therefore, as deserving as the men in the Navy. On Mr Marriner's motion, seconded 'by Colonel Hobday, it was decided to rescind the resolution previously arrived at, and that one-half tljo proceeds of Navy Day be forwarded to the Navy League headquarters for "Fine Day" of the League with which thu British and Foreign Sailors' Society is amalgamated.

Tho appeal for the dependants of the Naval heroes killed and maimed in the war, or who may be in future battles, will be made by the Christchurch branch of the Navy League, assisted by other organisations on Friday next. Arrangements are well' in hand, and besides the sale of badge? there will be 6talls for the sale of produce, flowers, sweets, books, nost cards, etc. There will also be a "Shrine," at which old gold and silver ornaments, or precious metals of any description will be received and sold for the benefit of tho fund. Any donations of prodiice, flowers, etc., will be gratefullv received by the secretary, Mr C. J. Treleaven.
