CHRISTMAS IN THE TRENCHES.
GIFTS FOB CANTERBURY
SOLDIERS
CLOSING OF "THE PRESS" LIST. The readers of "Tho Press" have responded nobly to our appeal for subscriptions for Christmas gifts for Canterbury soldiers, as is seen not only by the very handsome sum sent to "The Press" office, but to the still larger total sent direct to the Lady Liverpool depot from various sources.
The full amount required is not yet in hand. Encouraged by the manner in which subscriptions were coming in, the. Lady Liverpool Coruroittco not only extended tho value of tlio parcels, but sent £250 to the officers commanding the Canterbury men in France and Egypt to purchase fresh or canned fruit or vegetables to supply to the jnen on Christmas Day. They are
also sending parcels to the men in" Mesopotamia (which liavo to he posted and will bo . expensive). They also wish to provide Canterbury's share for a Christmas dinner for tlie men in tho various camps in New Zealand at that time.
We propose to close "The Press" list at the end of the present week. Tho total amount now subscribed, it will be seen, is £880 9d, and we hopo to see this raised to £1000—the total which our readers subscribed last year.
The Lady Liverpool Committee will go on with their good work of sending their regular monthly supply of parcels to the soldiers At the front.
