DEPARTING SOLDIERS.

VARIOUS PRESENTATIONS

The friends and relations of Mrs L. Bcecroft, Nursery road, Linwoofl, were entertained at a social evening in honour of Corporal W. Beecroft, of the 29th Reinforcement, who was on final leave. About thirty guest s were present, including Private R. Roud, of the same contingent. During the evening Corporal* Beecroft was presented with a shaving outfit, money bolt, a pipe, and a wristlet watch. Private Roud was also presented with a smoker's outfit. Private J. Beecroft, a brother of Corporal Beecroft, is already on his way with the 17th Reinforcements. Songs were contributed by the Misses Leah and Daphine Beecroft, Mrs White, and Mrs Clark, and recitations by Mr D. Wilson. Mrs G. 11. Roud provided the music.

At a meeting of the employees of M. O'Brien and Co., Ltd., held on Saturday, Mr J. Ballantine, in a congratulatory speech, presented Mr George Fransden, who is leaving -with the 19th Reinforcements, with a set of breast-plates, a safety razor, and a wristlet watch. Mr J. "W. Green referred to Sir Fransden's raanv good quality. The recipient suitably responded. A farewell social was tendered Private Reg. Milne who is on final leave, in the Broadfield schoolroom. The first part of the evening was devoted to progressive euchre, and the remainder to vocal items contributed by Mesdames Butcher and Clark, and Messrs A. Jones and J. Oimneen, after which snpper was served by the ladies of the district. The winners of the euchre prizes were—Ladies: Mrs E. Early 1, Mrs Butcher 2; Men: T. Reedy 1, E. Early 2. Mr J Cunneen, on behalf of the Broadfield residents, presented Private Milne with a 6et of military hair brushes in an inscribed ease. He referred to the high esteem which the departing soldier had won during his two years' residence in the district, and wished him God soeed /and a safe , return. Private Milne and Mr Milne j (senr.) replied. |
