The montldy meeting of tlio Xorthc: A. and P. Association was held yestc day. Present —Messrs T. Leech (chai man), J. D. Wyilie, R. Mcintosh, , W. Foster. J. Fleming, T. Hene. C. K. jjkevington, -A. Mcintosh, . K. ji.-nns. L. Marshall, F. John W. Staffer, S. J., Ryan, F. Mcrrii K. Pencil, A. -M. Carpenter, ] Ferguson, and U. D. Johns. Motions of sympathy were passe with Mr J. Little on tho death of h son. and with the friends of Sergeai J. ti. McNeil. The Kaiapoi Technical School wrol thanking the Association for a donatio of £3 as. The Waimakariri-Ashlc ! Supply Board wrote with refe I enw to bridging the water-raco in Asl ' lev street, and it was decided to sen : an urgent recommendation to the Boar i that a bridge of not less than 14 fee be placed on both sides of the road. Messrp M. O'Connor, J. D. Madelej A. E. Tl:ompson. and C. Moore wer nominated as members of the Associa tion. It was decided to ask the Mayor t request all sljopkeepers to close at 1 o'clock on Show Day. Thf> chairman presented the Associs tion Kith a flag, and a very hearty vot of thanks was passed to him in recoti ration of the gift, and of the wor which he has done in connexion wit the new cattle pens. With reference to the allocation c the profits of tho show, it was decide that 75 per cent, of the net profit should be equally divided among th Red Cross. Navy League, and Lad Liverpool Funds; the amount- paj abk> to the Rod Cross and Livcrpoc Funds to he subdivided among th various committees in the district i a manner to be decided by the Associa tion after tho show. Tho dction of th chairman in disposing of the rights o publican's booth for £12 10s was en dorsed. . In answer to a question. Mr John said that a concert would he held in th Drill Hall on show night, and the sue cessful queen candidate would then b crowned. He reported that tho Rang] ora Patriotic Committee had undei taken to provide the seats and stage fo the occasion.
The variotw collectors in. connexion with the produce tent roported that they had been well received, and 13 collectors reported the results of their efforts, which amounted to £237 in cash and produce. Mr S. Booth, .manager of the British and Foreign Sailors' Instituto at Lvttelton, attended, and made an appeal to the committeo on behalf of tho sailors. It was decided to defer the matter until after the show for favourable consideration. JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS. Mr Geo. Shipley, Island Farm. Harewood, from a flock of —600 ewetj has secured upwards of 3000 lambs, which is ail tmusual percentage for this season.
"I niav be a crank on this subject," said Mr' Guy Williams, at Saturday's meeting of the - Masterton A. and !'• Association, "but I svill hold that during the war we should offer certificates in'licu of prize money." Mr Williams ventured this opinion (says the "Age") on refusing to allow his name to be placed on » canvassing committee.
A Queensland buyer has* spent £3000 in the purchase of AberdeenAngus cattle in this district, and on Saturday next a herd of 115 stud bulls ami heifers is to ho shipped to Brisbane, this being the biggest shipment of stud cattle sent from New Zealand. Last year (telegraphs our Gisborne correspondent) the same purchaser' took 50 *head from this district, and the cattle found ranch favour in Australia, being a herd that splendidly stands the droughts common 'to Queensland. "They can practically live on hope," said the buyer., "and they hare the further advantage of maturing early."
The "Hawcra Star" reports:—Mr H. E. Candy, of Manaia. has secured gome results from a. suiall. holding of,_l2£ acres, which will take a lot of beating, and which demonstrates once more the possibilities of the best of the Taranaki land. Half an aero of his . scction is cnt out for house, garden, and orchard, thus'leaving 11J acres for dairyiupc gu imposes. In this he ran. nine ordinary Jersey cows, and they returned lost year *£240 for milk and butter, and he had in addition £4 10s for pifrs. • The cows were fed on nothing but what was <rrown on the place, and the total cropping amounted to half an acre and two acres of hay. - a CULVERBEN. Last week the Culyerden school children made a collection, of old bottles in aid of the Lady Liverpool Fund, and, as a result, a consignment of C 3 dozen assorted bottles was forwarded to Christchurch on Monday a s a first instalment.
Sheai-ing is now making a start m this district, and the firstr wool to be trucked at the Culverden station was loaded on Monday, being forwarded from the Kaiwara Estate which usually leads in this matter. The weather is keeping fine, and, good progress shouW be made if it holds for another few Lambing is well advanced, but the percentage of lambs this year appears to be below normal. KAIAPOI. The Rev. P. "W. Fairclough has accepted the invitatiou of the Methodist Church officials to remain in the circuit another year. A meeting of the Board of Managers of the Technical Classes Association was held last night. Present: Messrs J. H. Black well (chairman), T. Douds. T. R. Leithcad, J. Bryden, and TV: Doubleday. .A motion of sympatliv with Mr Doubleday in the death of his son at Fealherston Camp, was carried in silence. Mr F. E. Teppct, caretaker, applied for leave of absence while on active service, which was granted, Mrs Teppet having undertaken to act while her husband, is away. The secretary reported receipt of a donation of £3 3s from the Northern A. and P. Association. HARE WOOD. A concert, on behalf of the Hare wood school prize fund, was given in the Harewood Public Hall on Thursday evening by the Linwood "Cheer O" concert. party. There was a fairly large audience." Mr Geo. Shipley, chairman of the Jlarewood school committee, presided- ' At the close of tho programme tho hon. secretary to the committee moved, and Mr J. H. Powell seconded, a vote of thanks to the concert party which was heartily recorded. The singing a verse of the National Anthem closed the proceedings. BRO ADFIELDS. The members of the Methodist choir met on Thursday at the residence of Mr H. Butcher, to say good-bye to tho Misses Campion, who are leaving the district. The Rev. W. B. Scott, in a short speech, eulogised their work, and presented Miss G. Campion, on behalf of the choir, with a calf-bound Dorothy work-box. A similar gift was made to Miss' F. Campion as an. acknowledgment of her useful services in the Sunday school.
SPRIXGSTON. Op. Saturday evening in the SouthSpringston schoolroom, the annual raoßtin"; of tho_ local Sports Club was held, there being an attendance of twenty. The balance-sheet showed that last vfcar s gala had resulted in a sum of £46 lis, -which, was given to the County Patriotic Fund. The following officers were elected: Patron. Mr 31. F. !Ryan: president, Mr G. H. Cook; vice-presidents. Messrs G.'Mcßean, De La Cour, and Robertson; hon. secretary and treasurer. Mr A. Cooper. A deputation from the Springston Red Cross Men's Committee waited upon the meeting, and urged the claims of the Red Cross Society and the Lady Liverpool Fund. Mr Ryan proposed, s:nd Mr Do La Cour seconded, that the gala be gone on with, and that the funds be devoted to the local Red Cross .Society. The motion was carried. A general committee was formed, and members wore asked to get what trophies they could, also to suggest at ucxt meeting ways and means of raising the largest amount possible. A Programme Committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs Ryan, Cock. Do La Cour, Liddle, ana Cooper. RAKAIA. A meeting of the committee of the Rakaia Soldiers' Entertainment Society was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday evening. Thero were present: Rev. W. T. Todd 1 (chairman), Messrs S. Johnson, E. Brittenden, F. C. May, H. Haydoek, G. Pluck, B. McNamara, C. Shannon, J. Sowden, AV. F. Judkins. C. Tucker, E. Oakley, R. Purdom. and J. Duncan. Mr Tully forwarded an apology for absence. Messrs C. Tucker and S. Johnson wero appointed a subcommittee to arrange the"next farewell. A now type of hold-all was on view, and a vote of thanks was passed to tho Hon. C. A. C. Hardy for the trouble he had taken in connexion with the same. Accounts to the amount of £8 14s Gd were passed for payment. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs J. Penny. J. Sowden, C. Shannon, and G. Pluck, for the trouble and expen.se they had incurred in providing entertainments. A resolution was passed to the effect that sub-committees will provide programme free of cost to the committee.
