PRICKLY PEAR AND BLACK-
BERRY,
Writing to tho agricultural editor of tho "Weekly Press, - ' Air J. Brown, director of the Fields Division of tho 3>epartmcnt of Agriculture. Wellington, says:—
"'ln your i?s:ie of tho 11th inst.. you draw attention to tho investigations which are being made in New South "Wales and Queensland concerning the eradication of prickly pear bv means of gassing and spraying the plants with arscnious chloride. )'ou mention that it would bo worth while for the New Zealand Government to ascertain if the samo method could be successfully applied to tho destruction of blackberry. It will no doubt be of interest to you to know that this I>epartment is fully alive to tho importance of this matter, and has been watching the progress of development for some time. Several months ago it was decided to experiment on blackberry with ihig chemical, ;.nd .1 supply of arsenious chloride and an atomiser for use in connexion therewith was ordered from Australia, and is now en route, so that the matter will receive practical demonstration in tho near future.
"I may add that- the price of arsenious chloride is actually £7o per ton, not £22 as quoted in your article."
