CITY COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.
The Christchurch City Council met last night. Present—Tho Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and Crs. W. H. Cooper, J. Reynolds. J. McCombs, M.P., A. S. Taylor, E. Peck. J. McCnllough, W. Millar, Geo. Scott, H. J. Otley, H. F. Herbert. D. G. Sullivan, and J. O. Jameson. Regarding a block of land at the corner of Wordsworth street and Queen street, Sydenham, the Abattoir. Markets, ard Reserves Committee drew the Council's attention to the fact that it \v.is lving useless and entailing considerable annual loss. The committeo recommended the Council to either put the land up_-for sale by auction or t.iko steps t<. mako it revenue producing. The Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee also reported that the Sydenham TViblic Library Committee had requested that tho Council instal electric light throughout the Library, and either pay the whole cost or grant, a subsidy. A reply had been sent regretting that the work could not bo carried out during the present year for want of funds, but that an application made at tho end of the frJie&cial year would receive consideration when the next estimates wero being prepared. The committee's report war adopted. The Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee reported that it was in sympathy with the request for the erection of a dressing room at the Jerrokl street reserve, but regretted that no money was available for the purpose during tho current financial year. Cr. McCullougli moved that tho matter bo referred back to tho committee for further consideration. He stated that, the people making tho request had received a promise from the Council.
Other councillors stated that they could not see their way to support a proposal for voting the Council's rAoney for the erection of a dressing shed for footballers when other men wero at the front. It was also stated that it was just a question whether the erection of a dressing shed would not make the reserve too small a playing space for children. Cr. McCullough's amendment was lost and the committee's report adopted. The By-laws and Finance Committee reported that a number of owners cf property on the north sido of OfKco road, St. Albans Ward, had asked that the provisions of section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1908, should i>ct apr>lv to that side of the street. The City Surveyor reported that tho fire station and other buildings* had been built up to the street line on the north side, ard the streot widened on the south sido from Winchester street to Rossall street, and, in his opinion, all traSSc requirements would bo met if any further widening was carried out on the south sido in continnanco of that which had already been done, and the committee recommended that the request bo granted The Council resolved that tho provisions of tho section in question shall not apply to the north side of Offico road.
