The maiden speech in Dublin of Mr H. E. Duke, the new Under-Secretary for Ireland, produced an excellent effect. He indicated that the Government would assist the municipality in rebuilding the shim areas and rehousing 31,000 families at a coat of £3.500,000, as the social conditions in Dublin had fostered Sinn Fein ism. Ireland's revenue had risen from £11,000,000 to £18,000,uv/) during the war, and instead of Ireland costing the Exchequer £2,000,000 a year, sho was now contributing £5,300,000 yearly for ■war purposes.
