.NOTES AND NEWS. JOTTINGS FOB FARMERS. Already steps are being taken in connexion with preparing for the Canterbury A. and P. Association's November i?how. The prize schedule is being compiled at present, and will bo issued shortly. For the Canterbury A. and P. Association's liorse paraue. to be held at the Addington Show Grounds to-mor-row, thirty-four entries have been received, a slight decrease on the number received last year. The decrease is due, probably, to war conditions. Of the total entries, 22 are for competition. The horses for competition will be examined at 9 a.m. by Government veterinary surgeons at an enclosure on the feiiow Grounds, which has been specially provided for the purpose.

RANGIORA. Tho Rangiora draft of the 21st Reinforcements will parado at tlie Drill Hall at 12.30 to-day, and will proceed to the station accompanied by the Rangiora Band. The quarterly evening meeting of tho Royal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held last night. A now agreement, submitted by the Doctors' Committee of the Rangiora Friendly Societies, requiring members to pay an additional 5s per year, to cover medicine, was approved of. KIRWEE. There was' a large number of guests at a social held in Mr Youngman's grain shed on Friday evening. Songs , and recitations were contributed Mesdames A. Anderson and P. Watson, Misses E. Johnson, Greig, and Matson, and Messrs J. Burt and J. Bell. Dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied gratuitously by Mrs Christopherson, Mrs Motfatt, Miss Youngman, Miss Belgrave, and Mr R. Youngruan. The sum of £6 was collected, of which £5 goes to the Navy League Fund, and £1 to the Christmas Gifts Fund. Mr Youngman was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. WEST MELTON. A concert was held on Friday evening in the schoolroom in aid of the building fund of the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. A. T. Thompson occupied the chair. The following contributed to the programme:—Misses Bryce, Milne, Calcier, Harvey, Johnson, Hooker, and Messrs Bills, Harvey, .Master Jack Simms. and the Rev. A. T. Thompsons Apologies for absence were received from the Moderator, the Rev. D. D. Rodgers, and the Rev. Mr Brown. The concert was very success, ful, the sum of £10 being realised.

There i was a large and appreciative audience. The proceeds from the gathering are to be given to Bro. C. Skinner, who "recently had the misfortune to lose a leg. The chairman read the Roll of Honour, containing 27/ lames of members who "were on active service. During the interval, Private D. Ballock presented Mr Skinner with a watch from the old boys of Dunsandel School. The recipient suitably responded. A, splendid programme was given by the 1 following Misses Packer. H. M. Henderson, L. Withers, McDowell, and" B. Burgess, Mrs McDowell, Messrs F. Hemmings, T. Chappel, 'W. R. Owers, 6. Burgess. W. Harper, and J. McLean. The accompanists were Misses Packer, Reid, and F. Henderson, and Mr 6 Delargey. Tho dance music was supplied by Messrs M. O'Brien, W. and T. Chappel, and J. Burgess, and Miss Chappel. Messrs T. Chappel and T. Noble acted as M.C.'s. RAKAIA. Farrier-Sergeant W. Stree.t, of Rakaia, who went away .with the 2nd Reinforcements, and was invalided from Gallipoli with enteric, writes to his mothefr from Codford, Wiltshire, where he is on duty in the military police:— "I will have celebrated my Beoond birthday away from home before you get this, but I hope to have it under more pleasant circumstances this year, i Still, I remember we had a nice little special spread in Malta. Most,' or rather all, of my mates that were there have either broken up or are in hospitals in New Zealand. All men in this camp who have had enteric have been classed B, which mearfs fit for all duties except active service, and there are very few who will see tho I front again." ASHBURTON. At the Ashburton Coifjt oji Thursday, a woman from Ratgiiata will appear to answer three charges of alleged opening of postal matter. At tho anniversary tea-meeting in connexion with the Mayfield Methodist Church, tho Rev. W. E. Sleep presided. A feature of the evening's programme was an address by the Rev. 11. Tahu Patiki Haddon, who outlined the early history of the Maoris from the coming of the Rev. Samuel' Marsden. Addresses were also given by the Revs. G. Frost and P. Wilson. N There was a very large attendance at the Cafe Chantant on Saturday evening, and brisk business was done by the various stall-holders and at the numerous side-shows. Up to Saturday, tho total takings Eince the opening of the fair on Thursday amounted to over £1100. which included £173 6s for the sale of a flag, the final purchaser beintr Mr Thomas Bullock, who handed it back to be placed in the Hisrh School. The fair was continued last nieht, and will be brought to a close this evening.
